5 Tips for Saving Money Moving into Your First Apartment

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on 5 Tips for Saving Money Moving into Your First Apartment

BudgetingMoving into your first apartment is an exciting step. You no longer have to worry about abiding by your parents rules, you can decorate however you want, and you have a new sense of independence. While it’s an exciting time in your life, it can also be stressful mananging your finances. Paying rent and utilities, purchasing furniture, and paying students loans while still saving money and having a social life can be a big adjustment. We’re sharing our best tips to help you get through this exciting time in your life without going broke.

1. Know and stick to your budget

Before starting your search for an apartment, go through all of your finances and figure what you can afford. It’s easy to disregard your budget when you view an apartment that’s in the perfect location or nicer than others in the neighborhood. If you absolutely can’t pass up a place that is outside of your budget, remember that thay money has to come from somewhere and that might mean taking it from other areas of your total budget. Are you willing to give up social activities you look forward to every week?

2. Budget for everything

With rent already budgeted out, budget out the rest of your money. One of our favorite budeting tactics is the 50-30-20 rule: put 50% of your income towards fixed monthly paments (rent, student loans, utilities, etc.), 30% into savings and investments, and 20% for leisure. Even when you have bills stacking high, taking yourself out to dinner once a month or spending an evening of friends is important for your sanity.

3. Make extra income before your move

The more money you can save leading up to a move, the better. Having a little extra saved up will make things a little less stressful, provide you with a cushion if an unbudgeted event comes up, and will allow you a little extra spending money for stocking up on food basics and toiletries. A few months prior to your move, pick up a few temporary jobs here and there or sell some of the items you no longer use. Stick all of this money away in your savings to use during your move.

4. Have an open mind when funishing your new home

Purchasing new furniture for an entire home is extremely expensive and will quickly drain your savings. Spend money on the necessary things like a couch and mattress, but be more cautious about the money you spend on decorations, a kitchen table, lamps, etc. Head to yard sales, stores like IKEA, TJMaxx and Homegoods, and good ole Craigslist to purchase the items that you don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money on. You can always replace them slowly over the next few months or even years!

5. Save money on food

Ordering take out and eating out with friends on a regular basis adds up quickly. Save money by investing in spices, rubs, and a crock pot so you can bulk prep your food so you have no excuse to be ordering take out. Start packing your lunch for work and buy yourself a coffee maker to eliminate the $5 coffee you order at Starbucks each morning.

Whether you’re moving into your first apartment or moving to new apartment a few blocks away, A-Z Express Movers can help eliminate the stress of packing, unpacking, and moving. Give us a call at (603) 893-5060 or request your free quote today!

How to Successfully Move with Pets

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on How to Successfully Move with Pets

DogMoving can be a stressful process for people and can be especially overwhelming for pets. Animals stress very easily, especially when there is unexpected activity in their home, traveling, and introduction new places. Although not an easy task moving your beloved family pets, it’s a task many people have experienced but being prepared can make the experience easier.

1. Prepared an overnight kit. Include food, toys, grooming tools, treats, kitty litter, and any other items your pet might need for the first few days at your new home to keep them happy and comfortable as you begin to unpack.

2. Speak with your vet. Before moving, contact your vet to inform them of the move and to set up a visit to make sure your pet is in good health. If you need to switch vets due to the move, make sure to get any records and prescription medication.

3. Seclude your pet from the action. During your move, it’s ideal to keep your pets away from all of the action of packing and movers in and out of your home. If you can, have a friend or family member watch after your pet or bring them to the kennel for the day to completely remove them from any stressful situation. If this isn’t possible, keep them in a bedroom or other room in the house with the door closed or in their kennel in the basement or garage.

4. Transport your pet in your vehicle. Bring your pet to your new home in a car they are familiar with. If they get anxious in the car, place them in their kennel or carrier in the backseat or truck and place a blanket over the carrier to prevent them from seeing the environment around them changing.

5. Update your pets information. Be prepared to update the information on your pets tags and microchip with your new address and phone number.

Tips for Shipping Your Car During a Move

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Tips for Shipping Your Car During a Move

Car Transporter TruckMoving long distance takes a lot of time and planning from finding a moving company to packing up your home and moving into your new space. Although A-Z Express does not provide car moving services, we have dealt with the car shipping process personally and with various jobs, so we know how stressful it can be.  Much like selecting a moving company, it’s important to look at the big picture, ask questions, and know what to expect when choosing a company to ship your car during a move.

Customer Reviews

Before purchasing a product or service, it’s important to read customer reviews to see what their feedback on the company is (good or bad) and to get a better idea of how the company operates. This will give you a good idea of whether the company is reputable and if it’s worth your time to consider them to ship your car.

Questions to Ask

  • Are you insured against damage and theft?
  • How long will it take to ship?
  • Will you bring my car to my home or do I have to pick it up at a terminal?
  • Do you have open and closed transport options?
  • What documents do you need?
  • What happens if your car does get damaged?

Get Multiple Quotes

All car transportation companies base their pricing off of the following:

  • Distance
  • Make/Model
  • Operating condition
  • Weight/Size
  • Insurance coverage

Shipping your car is expensive and receiving multiple quotes to see what fits within your budget is ideal. Aim to receive at least three quotes, from there go over the details of each company and the services they offer.

Document the Condition of Your Car

Before sending your car off with the shipping company you’ve chosen, do a full interior and exterior clean of your car. Afterwards, carefully record any scratches, dents, and rust spots on the outside of your vehicle as well as the inside for scratches, dents, markings, etc. The best way to document these conditions is by taking photos and storing them on your computer.

Remove All Personal Items from Your Car

All personal items on the inside or outside of your car should be removed prior to shipping. This includes GPS devices, E-Z Passes, ski racks, bike racks, roof racks, and important media items (CDs, MP3 players, AUX cords). Act as though you are selling your car so that you ensure all personal items are removed.

5 Tips for Downsizing to a Smaller Home

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on 5 Tips for Downsizing to a Smaller Home

Moving BoxesNo matter what the circumstance is, downsizing to a smaller home is always an adjustment but by making some small changes before the move can set you up for an easier adjustment period. Our experienced team of movers have put together their best tips for handling this adjustment to help you downsize to a smaller home.

Don’t wait until the last minute to start packing and organizing for your move. Since you will be downsizing, there will be items that won’t be needed in your new space and items that just don’t fit. Make a plan as early as possible so you can figure out what you’re going to do with these items and how you’re going to pack up the item you’ll be keeping. Don’t wait until you have moved in to your new space to go through all of your belongings – it’ll save you from unnecessary headache and will save you money.

When you’re going through all of the item you’re going to keep, donate, and trash, bring in someone close to you that can keep an objective opinion. Sometimes when you’re going through your own personal belongings, it’s hard to keep an objective opinion about whether or not you truly need an item. By bringing someone else in to give a helping hand, it allows you to get rid of the items that you likely wouldn’t have used in the next ten years.

When downsizing, think about the items you want to take with you. Just because you might have space for it, doesn’t mean it’s necessary to have a bunch of stuff laying around. The easiest way to de-clutter but keep those necessary items is to think about how it’s being stored. Mount your TV to the wall instead of having it on a TV stand, purchase a printer that has Wi-Fi capabilities to eliminate extra wires, and have a storage bench at your kitchen table instead of a regular bench so you can store items out of plain site.

There are numerous ways to de-clutter and reuse your belongings in nontraditional ways to keep the clutter at bay.

The easiest way to stress yourself out about a big move is trying to tackle your plans and packing in one go. Break up each step in the moving process into weeks and determine what goal you want to set for each week to help break up the process. Over time, things will get done little by little at an organized rate instead of in a short period of time with your current home becoming a disaster zone.

Other than finding a new home to live in and signing the papers, the most important step in the moving process is figuring out your plans for the actual move. Are you going to have a group of friends help you move your belongings from point A to point B? Are you going to be renting a moving truck and making multiple trips? Is it best to just hire someone so you don’t have to worry about moving all of your belongings into your new place?

Deciding on the right mode of moving for you and finding the right moving company can make a huge difference in your moving experience.

For all of your local and long distance moving needs, A-Z Express Movers is here to help! Call us at (603) 893-5060 to make an appointment or request a quote!

Tips For Choosing A Local Moving Company

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Tips For Choosing A Local Moving Company

man lifting boxAs most homeowners can attest, moving can be a complicated process, but that doesn’t mean you have to let it stress you out. Set aside some time for yourself to do some research to prevent any moving scams and decrease the stress that comes with a local move. A-Z Express Movers has put together a few tips to help prevent a stressful move!

  • As you begin looking for a moving company, talk to your friends and see who they have used. A respected company is going to have happy customers who are willing to share their experience. Look for review websites and the moving company’s social media profiles for more opinions.
  • Speak with a trusted advisor, like a real estate agent or contractor, who work with moving companies on a day to day basis. They can provide you with their professional opinion on the companies you bring to them.
  • For each moving company you are considering, contact each one to get their legal name and ‘doing business as’ name, DOT and MC license numbers and the number of years they’ve been in business. With this information, you can then go to FMCSA resources to ensure that the companies are federally licensed.

Receiving Moving Estimates

A legitimate moving company will provide you with an in-home estimate for your upcoming move. Be sure that you show every room, space or nook and cranny to ensure there are no surprise fees come moving day.

Avoiding Moving Scams

Moving scams happen more often than you think-about 3,000 Americans a year will be scammed by a moving company. Be on the lookout for the following red flags as you make your way through the moving process:

  • Don’t provide a deposit before your belongings are moved
  • Ensure that they have a physical address
  • Check their qualifications with companies like the Better Business Bureau (BBB) or American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA)

If you have an upcoming move and are looking for a trusted and local company, look no further than A-Z Express Movers! We provide nothing, but the best when it comes to our moving and packing services. Receive a quote today by calling us at 603-893-5060 or by filling out our online form

Organize Your Children’s Things Before You Move

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Organize Your Children’s Things Before You Move

messy roomAs anyone with children knows, doing certain activities with them can be a bit of a challenge! What can be even more challenging is packing up their belongings for an upcoming move and the purging that comes with packing. A-Z Express Movers have put together a few suggestions to make this transition easier on you and your children.

  • For the most part, kids love feeling like they are being treated like an adult. Ask them for their help and that their job is to help you put their toys into different piles. Create three boxes: donate, keep and toss and have your kids start putting toys into the boxes. Only keep the toys that your kids use and like the most. Anything else can either be donated or thrown out.
  • For the toys that you’ll be holding onto, create subcategories for them. All of the crafts should stay together, characters in another pile and so on and so forth. You most likely will end up with a pile of random toys and that’s ok! Put each category in its own box or container to keep them organized.
  • For the leftover toys that haven’t been categorized, try to donate or throw these out. If you’re not ready to get rid of them just yet, put them in a separate bag and keep stored away from the keepers. Come back to these toys once you’re all moved and unpacked and see if you’d like to hold on to them after all.
  • Your child might be a little upset that he/she has to part with toys to be donated. Say something along the lines of, “We’re going to be donating these toys to children who might not be able to buy toys. Do you want to help by putting the toys you don’t use in this box?”
  • If your child is in elementary school, have them practice writing by creating the labels for their boxes. The more specific you can be with dividing and labeling, the easier it will be when you are unpacking.

Tips for Preparing for Your NH Moving Company

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Tips for Preparing for Your NH Moving Company

Moving to and from New Hampshire can be a hassle, especially when you have a lot of belongings and furniture that needs to come with you. Whether you’re relocating to a house in Lowell, MA or just to the next town over in Salem, each move is different! A-Z Express Movers, Inc. has put together a list of things you can do before your local moving company arrives on the big day.

  • As you start packing up your belongings, put aside any items you know you don’t want or need anymore. Over time, things can accumulate and you just don’t have the time to get rid of them. Moving is a fresh start so don’t include any unwanted items in that fresh start! Make a pile for donation, sell and junk to help determine where items will go.
  • Depending on your family, moving can be daunting and stressing. If you have children, they may be switching schools or their schedule, which can be chaotic for them. You may have to take time off from work for your move as well. Schedule a family meeting to go over a plan of action to ensure that everyone is on the same page, coming moving day.
  • When you begin to pack, make sure to mark the boxes or containers with either which room they’ll be going in or what’s in them. This will make it easier for you and the movers to organize boxes in your new home and ensure they’re in the right room.

Avoid a stressful move by planning ahead with your family and moving company! For more moving tips or to learn about our moving services, contact A-Z Express Movers at 978-453-9040 or by filling out our online form.

What Else Can I Use to Pack up My Home?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on What Else Can I Use to Pack up My Home?

suitcasesWhen it comes to your long distance or local move, most Lowell & Dracut residents turn to cardboard boxes for packing. While they’re usually the most popular choice, there are other options for packing up your belongings. A-Z Express Movers, Inc. has been put together a list of environmentally friendly alternatives than cardboard boxes for your big moving day!

  • When it comes to packing your clothes, suitcases might not necessarily be a new idea, but you can also use them to pack up other items you own. Things like papers, small appliances or serving ware are great examples of what you can pack away in your suitcase. You’ll be able to wheel these items in and out of your new home without having to do any heavy lifting!
  • If you have any oversized totes, use these for kitchen utensils, picture frames, knick-knacks and any other miscellaneous items. Be sure to wrap these items in bubble wrap or newspaper to prevent damage.
  • If you have a home office that needs to be packed up, use any briefcases you have for laptops, important documents, etc. When you’re unpacking, it will be easy to identify which room it goes in since it’ll be in a briefcase!
  • If you own any ottomans or bed frames with drawers, store your bedding materials in here. You don’t want to make these items too heavy, which is why sheets, pillows and blankets are great things to store here.

Go green and pack up your belongings with the items mentioned above! If you need more packing tips or are interested in learning more about our local moving services, contact our experienced moving company! Tips for Your Out of State Move

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Tips for Your Out of State Move

moving boxesFor NH or MA residents that have decided to pack up and move their things across state borders, believe it or not, but that’s the easy part. Like all moves, a move across state lines can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be! As a professional moving company, A-Z Express Movers, Inc. has a few tips to ensure your long-distance move goes as smoothly as it can!

  • Before you make the actual move, you’re going to need to create a plan that will include how it will be organized. Things to think about are your budget, can you use your own car or do you need to rent a truck to move things or should you hire movers? It’s important to figure out these things beforehand so you’re not stuck in a pickle come the day of your move.
  • Because an out-of-state move is typically more expensive, take inventory of all your belongings and see if there are things you can get rid of, sell or donate. This is a good time to downsize and really purge any belongings you know you don’t need, like that book report from the 5th grade. For any items you can sell, use that money towards your move!
  • If you’re hiring movers, be sure to ask questions about anything and everything! It’s best to have too much information about things like a time frame, price, etc. than not enough information come your moving day.

Like any other move, hiring a professional moving company takes any unnecessary stress off of you and your family on the big day. With years of out of state moves, A-Z Express Movers has the experience to ensure that your move goes as smoothly as possible. Whether you’re moving from Lowell MA to Salem NH or vice versa, our expert movers will take care of all your moving needs! To receive a long-distance move quote, call us at 978-453-9040 or fill out our online form.
