5 Tips for Downsizing to a Smaller Home

Moving BoxesNo matter what the circumstance is, downsizing to a smaller home is always an adjustment but by making some small changes before the move can set you up for an easier adjustment period. Our experienced team of movers have put together their best tips for handling this adjustment to help you downsize to a smaller home.

Don’t wait until the last minute to start packing and organizing for your move. Since you will be downsizing, there will be items that won’t be needed in your new space and items that just don’t fit. Make a plan as early as possible so you can figure out what you’re going to do with these items and how you’re going to pack up the item you’ll be keeping. Don’t wait until you have moved in to your new space to go through all of your belongings – it’ll save you from unnecessary headache and will save you money.

When you’re going through all of the item you’re going to keep, donate, and trash, bring in someone close to you that can keep an objective opinion. Sometimes when you’re going through your own personal belongings, it’s hard to keep an objective opinion about whether or not you truly need an item. By bringing someone else in to give a helping hand, it allows you to get rid of the items that you likely wouldn’t have used in the next ten years.

When downsizing, think about the items you want to take with you. Just because you might have space for it, doesn’t mean it’s necessary to have a bunch of stuff laying around. The easiest way to de-clutter but keep those necessary items is to think about how it’s being stored. Mount your TV to the wall instead of having it on a TV stand, purchase a printer that has Wi-Fi capabilities to eliminate extra wires, and have a storage bench at your kitchen table instead of a regular bench so you can store items out of plain site.

There are numerous ways to de-clutter and reuse your belongings in nontraditional ways to keep the clutter at bay.

The easiest way to stress yourself out about a big move is trying to tackle your plans and packing in one go. Break up each step in the moving process into weeks and determine what goal you want to set for each week to help break up the process. Over time, things will get done little by little at an organized rate instead of in a short period of time with your current home becoming a disaster zone.

Other than finding a new home to live in and signing the papers, the most important step in the moving process is figuring out your plans for the actual move. Are you going to have a group of friends help you move your belongings from point A to point B? Are you going to be renting a moving truck and making multiple trips? Is it best to just hire someone so you don’t have to worry about moving all of your belongings into your new place?

Deciding on the right mode of moving for you and finding the right moving company can make a huge difference in your moving experience.
